Mount Washington, Kentucky

Mount Washington is a home rule-class city[3] in northeast Bullitt County, Kentucky, in the United States. The population was 9,117 at the 2010 census.[4] The city is one of several surrounding Louisville that have experienced a sharp rise in population in the past three decades, becoming a commuter town.

Mount Washington is located at what was once the crossroads of two stagecoach routes and was originally known as The Cross Roads. It was formally established in 1822 as Mount Vernon, after President George Washington's Virginia home, but it was unable to continue using the name because another town's post office had priority. At the time, the settlement housed c. 700 people and boasted three churches, two schools, six stores and groceries, five doctors, two taverns, and twelve mechanical trades. At the time of its (first) formal incorporation as a city in 1833, the town's name was changed to "Mount Washington", again in honor of the first United States president.

Mount Washington became the economic center of Bullitt County by the 1850s. In the autumn of 1862, during the Civil War, the town was held by John Wharton's Confederate cavalry, who skirmished with Maj. Gen. Thomas L. Crittenden's men north of Mount Washington along Floyds Fork on October 1. A defeat the following day led to a Confederate retreat from the area.

West Van Lear, Kentucky

West Van Lear is an unincorporated community in Johnson County, Kentucky, United States. Even though it is unincorporated, it has a post office and its own ZIP code (41268).[1] It has a small grocery store, a volunteer fire department, and a community center.

Williamstown, Kentucky

Williamstown is a home-rule-class city in Grant and Pendleton counties in the U.S. state of Kentucky. The population was 3,925 at the 2010 census,[3] up from 3,227 as of the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Grant County.[4]

When Grant County was formed in 1820, William Arnold offered land for the county seat. Arnold was a veteran of the Revolutionary War and settled in the area in 1795. The town built there was named after him when it incorporated in 1825.[5]

The county grew slowly, reaching a population of just 281 by 1870. The Cincinnati Southern Railway was built through the county in 1877, and Williamstown Lake was created in 1957. Finally, Interstate 75 was built in the 1960s.

Kentucky Route 699

Kentucky Route 699 (KY 699) is a 27.731-mile-long (44.629 km) state highway in southeastern Leslie County and southern Perry County, Kentucky, that runs from KY 80 south of Wooton to KY 77 southwest of Cornettsville via Smilax, Cutshin, Yeaddiss, and Slemp.

Vicco, Kentucky

Vicco is a home rule-class city in Perry and Knott counties, Kentucky, United States. The population was 334 at the 2010 census.[2] On January 16, 2013, Vicco became the smallest city in the United States to pass an ordinance outlawing discrimination based on sexual orientation.[3][4]

Vicco was originally a coal mining town; its name comes from the initials of the Virginia Iron Coal and Coke Company. The city was known for its bars and entertainment; The New York Times described it as "the local coal miner's Vegas". The decline of the coal industry in the region brought economic trouble to Vicco, as local businesses closed and the city faced severe budget deficits. However, the city has recently attempted a revival, having restarted its defunct police force among other measures.[3]

Vicco is located in eastern Perry County at 37°12′58″N 83°3′40″W / 37.21611°N 83.06111°W / 37.21611; -83.06111 (37.216186, -83.061089).[5] A small portion of the city extends northeast into neighboring Knott County. The city is in the valley of the Carr Fork, a west-flowing tributary of the North Fork of the Kentucky River.

Water Valley, Kentucky

As of the census[4] of 2000, there were 316 people, 141 households, and 90 families residing in the city. The population density was 508.0 people per square mile (196.8/km²). There were 166 housing units at an average density of 266.8 per square mile (103.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 94.94% White, 4.75% African American, 0.32% from other races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.32% of the population.

There were 141 households out of which 29.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.4% were married couples living together, 9.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.5% were non-families. 34.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.24 and the average family size was 2.84.

In the city, the population was spread out with 24.1% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 89.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.

Nguyễn Cao Kỳ

Nguyễn Cao Kỳ (listen; 8 September 1930 – 23 July 2011)[1][2] served as the chief of the Republic of Vietnam Air Force in the 1960s, before leading the nation as the prime minister of South Vietnam in a military junta from 1965 to 1967. Then, until his retirement from politics in 1971, he served as vice president to bitter rival General Nguyễn Văn Thiệu, in a nominally civilian administration.[3]

Born in northern Vietnam, Kỳ joined the Vietnamese National Army of the French-backed State of Vietnam and started as an infantry officer before the French sent him off for pilot training. After the French withdrew from Vietnam and the nation was partitioned, Kỳ moved up the ranks of the Republic of Vietnam Air Force to become its leader. In November 1963, Kỳ participated in the coup that deposed president Ngô Đình Diệm and resulted in Diệm's assassination.

In 1964 Kỳ became prominent in junta politics, regarded as part of a group of young, aggressive officers dubbed the Young Turks. Over the next two years, there were repeated coup attempts, many of which were successful, and Kỳ was a key player in supporting or defeating them. In September 1964, he helped put down a coup attempt by Generals Lâm Văn Phát and Dương Văn Đức against Nguyễn Khánh, and the following February he thwarted another attempt by Phát and Phạm Ngọc Thảo. His favored tactic in such situations was to send fighter jets into the air and threaten large-scale air strikes, and given his reputation for impetuosity, he usually attained the desired backdown. After the latter attempt, he also had the weakened Khánh forced into exile and eventually took the leading position in the junta in mid-1965 by becoming prime minister, while General Thiệu was a figurehead chief of state. During his period at the helm, he gained notoriety for his flamboyant manner, womanizing, and risky and brash behavior, which deeply concerned South Vietnam's American allies and angered the Vietnamese public, who regarded him as a "cowboy" and "hooligan".[4] He cared little for public relations, and on occasion publicly threatened to kill dissidents and opponents as well as to flatten parts of North Vietnam and South Vietnamese units led by rival officers with bombings, although none of this materialized.

Willisburg, Kentucky

Willisburg was founded in 1838, and was named for Captain Henry Willis, a Revolutionary War veteran. The city expanded in the 1870s as a crossroads community at the intersection of two turnpikes. Willisburg incorporated in 1965.[3]

Willisburg is located at 37°48′36″N 85°7′19″W / 37.81000°N 85.12194°W / 37.81000; -85.12194 (37.810137, -85.121919).[4] The city is concentrated along Kentucky Route 433 (Main Street), mostly in the vicinity of its intersection with Kentucky Route 53, west of Harrodsburg and northeast of Springfield. Willisburg Lake, an impoundment of Lick Creek built by the city in the late 1960s, lies just to the northwest.

As of the census[6] of 2000, there were 304 people, 109 households, and 68 families residing in the city. The population density was 570.4 people per square mile (221.5/km²). There were 119 housing units at an average density of 223.3 per square mile (86.7/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 92.76% White, 5.92% African American, and 1.32% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.33% of the population.
